TULLIO MOBIGLIA

JAZZ IN ITALY IN THE 40s

Il complesso che Tullio Mobiglia diresse ininterrottamente a Berlino fra l'aprile 1941 e l'agosto '43 fu, unitamente a quello di Kramer della seconda metà degli anni Trenta, l'unico gruppo stabile della storia del jazz italiano fra il 1935 ed il '43. Musicisti di due diverse generazioni, il trombettista Alfredo Marzaroli e il sassofonista e clarinettista Francesco Paolo Ricci che avevano iniziato la loro carriera già negli anni Venti, e i più giovani Tullio Mobiglia, Eraldo Romanoni, Carlo Pecori e il triestino Angelo Bartole, formarono un gruppo estremamente omogeneo che suonò durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale a Berlino. Geniale e inventivo era soprattutto il chitarrista Alfio Grasso che non faceva parte dell'orchestra di Mobiglia ma che fu chiamato dal sassofonista per prendere parte alle incisioni. Quasi del tutto sconosciuto dalle Storie del jazz fu, per molti musicisti tedeschi dell'epoca, un vero caposcuola.

The band that Tullio Mobiglia directed without interruption in Berlin between April 1941 and August '43 was, along with the Kramer's Orchestra of the second half of the Thirties, the only stable group in the history of Italian Jazz between the years 1935 and '43.
Musicians from two different generations formed his orchestra. The trumpet player Alfredo Marzaroli and sax and clarinet player Francesco Paolo Ricci, who had begun their careers in the Twenties, along with the younger members, Tullio Mobiglia, Eraldo Romanoni, Carlo Pecori and the Triestino Angelo Bartole, formed an extremely homogeneous group that performed during the Second World War in Berlin.
Brilliant and inventive, Alfio Grasso, the guitar player, was not part of Mobiglia's orchestra but was called in by the tenor player to take part in the recordings. Almost completely unknown in Jazz histories, he was for many Germans of that time, a real founder.
